CBC News has reported that 1 in every 2 cars fails the new emissions test. But what are they looking for? Basically every vehicle over 3 years old requires an emission test every 5 years before the owner can renew the license plate for the year. This testing of course was put into play to help reduce smog emissions in Southern Ontario.

How can you ensure your car will pass the test? Well in essence, you would think that just keeping up on basic preventative maintenance on your vehicle would do the trick – the usual oil change, checking fluids etcetera. But really it all has to do with the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is the main component on your vehicle that is responsible for controlling engine emissions. They work by having rare metals inside them that the gas fumes flow through. These rare metals convert pollutants in the exhaust gas into less harmful gasses.

Vehicle emissions use a visual inspection at first to make sure all parts in your vehicle are installed properly. Then the computer test makes sure the sensors are functioning correctly as well.
